Efficacity proven

Scientific studies and recognized publications show that Citric Acid acts at various levels in the skin:

Regulation of flakiness
By reducing the cohesion of dead cells on the surface of the epidermis, Citric Acid encourages their elimination and stimulates the growth of new cells to renew the skin.

Its astringent properties help to tighten dilated pores and refine the complexion.

Acceleration of cell renewal
The exfoliant effect of Citric Acid brings about a reduction in the depth of the superficial layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum) and also increases the depth of the lower layers.
Dead cells are effectively and quickly renewed by younger cells, which will form a visibly more luminous skin.

Stimulation of the synthesis of key constituents in the skin
Citric Acid stimulates the production of GAGs (glycoaminoglycans) and increases the number of collagen and elastin fibres.

Controlling pigmentation
It has been shown in skin biopsies that treatment with Citric Acid (applied twice a day for 6 months) fosters better distribution

Scientific history

AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) are naturally present in various fruits, plants and dairy products.

Their effectiveness is highly dependent on their concentration:

  • at a low concentration (2 to 5%): they have a moisturizing effect
  • at a high concentration (10 to 25%): they have an exfoliant and regenerating effect to work on the radiance of the complexion. Scientists have now confirmed their regenerating effectiveness and their ability to stimulate the synthesis of collagen and elastin.
  • at a very high concentration (30 to 70%): they are reserved for medical use, for dermabrasions and specific dermatological treatments.

Opinion of the dermatologist

Citric Acid - Pure Active A60

Citric acid is a fruit acid (AHA). These acids, particularly glycolic acid, are widely used in dermatology to perform superficial peelings. Citric acid can be used at this concentration (10%) every day or, in any case, several times a week, as it has a better tolerance profile than smaller AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid).

It should be noted, however, that tingling sensations and redness may be observed in the initial stages of treatment, particularly on sensitive skin. It's all about persevering, spacing out the applications if necessary, for the discomfort generally passes in a few weeks. However, some skins never tolerate fruit acids.

Citric acid is an exfoliant and accelerates epidermal renewal, which gives it its "peeling" effect, making the complexion visibly more radiant as of the first weeks of use. Its more prolonged use (several months) may have an anti-ageing effect by improving the quality of the dermis: increase in glycosaminoglycans and the synthesis of collagen and elastic fibres.

To find our more about peelings

There are various type of chemical peelings, which are indicated for ageing of facial skin as well as for the neck, the upper chest and the back of the hands. We classify peelings according to their level of penetration into the skin. From the most superficial to the deepest, they are aimed at more or less marked ageing. The benefits for the skin are the partial or total replacement of the epidermis (superficial to medium peelings) to the creation of alterations to the dermis to stimulate the synthesis of new collagen, which results in resurfacing (medium to deep peelings)

Peelings with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are the most commonly practised in France and are intended for moderate photo-ageing. Several sessions spaced over approximately one month, progressively increasing the AHA concentration (from 20 to 70%), are needed to optimize the results. They are effective on shallow wrinkles, on certain pigment disorders, evening out the complexion, and giving a noticeably radiant complexion.

Medium peelings (trichloroacetic acid at 35 or 50%) and especially deep peelings (phenol) are intended for more accentuated photo-ageing. They are more effective than superficial peelings but also more painful with more significant after effects. They must be carried out by trained operators.
